Few resort courses in Upstate New York carry the cultural weight of Kaluhyat, the signature layout at Turning Stone Resort Casino, owned and operated by the Oneida Indian Nation. The course opened in 2003 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., who routed 18 holes through a heavily wooded landscape of rolling glacial terrain — the kind of hardwood-and-pine setting that defines central New York's interior. The name itself comes from the Oneida language, meaning "place of many rocks," a nod to the geological character of the land and the Nation's deep connection to it.
Kaluhyat has earned serious recognition, consistently ranking among the top public-access courses in New York State and drawing players who make dedicated trips to Turning Stone specifically for the golf. Jones Jr. gave it genuine strategic variety, with demanding tee shots through tree-lined corridors and greens that reward patience over aggression.
Verona sits in Madison County, midway between Syracuse and Utica, in a region of farmland, forest, and glacially sculpted hills. The setting is unpretentious but genuinely beautiful, and the golf here punches well above the expectations you might bring to a casino resort.
