Few public golf courses in northeast Ohio carry as much history as Manakiki. Designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1929, the course was originally built as a private club before eventually coming under the management of the Cleveland Metroparks system, which now operates it as one of the region's most accessible and beloved public layouts. Ross's fingerprints are unmistakable throughout — crowned greens that repel imprecise approaches, subtle fairway contours that reward positioning over brute force, and a routing that works gracefully with the rolling, wooded terrain of the Chagrin Valley corridor.
The setting itself does much of the work. Mature hardwoods frame nearly every hole, and the elevation changes give the course a character that feels far removed from the flat lakeside topography many associate with this part of Ohio. Fall rounds, when the canopy turns, are genuinely memorable.
As a Metroparks facility, Manakiki punches well above its weight in terms of architectural pedigree. For players who appreciate classic design, it stands as one of the better reasons to make the drive out to Willoughby Hills.
