Cedar Rapids has long supported a municipal golf tradition, and Ellis Golf Course sits within that civic fabric as a public option open to anyone willing to show up and play. Named for Ellis Park, the recreation area along the Cedar River that houses it, the course has the feel of a neighborhood institution — the kind of place where regulars know each other by name and the same faces appear at the first tee on Saturday mornings year after year.
Eastern Iowa's landscape is defined by rolling terrain carved by river valleys, and the Cedar River corridor gives Ellis a natural setting that separates it from flatter, more exposed layouts in the region. Trees mature enough to shape strategy line many holes, and the ground movement inherited from the park's topography keeps the round from feeling like an exercise in monotony.
At par 72, Ellis plays as a full test rather than a quick executive round — long enough to demand a complete game, but accessible enough that players of most skill levels leave feeling like they got real golf for their money.
