Monticello sits in the heart of Sullivan County, in the Catskill Mountains of New York — a region that spent much of the 20th century as the vacation playground of the Northeast, built on grand resort hotels, summer bungalow colonies, and a culture of leisure that drew millions up from the city. Golf was always part of that fabric, and the Catskills still carry a certain old-school resort character that's hard to find anywhere else on the East Coast.
Monster Golf Club carries a name that practically dares you to take it lightly. A par 75 is unusual in modern resort golf — neither the tidy symmetry of a 72 nor quite the sprawling ambition of some vintage designs — and it hints at a layout that doesn't force its holes into conventional shapes. Whether that extra par comes from a genuinely fearsome long hole or two, or from some generously rated par 5s, the number at least earns the name a little credibility.
As a resort course in this part of the Catskills, expect surroundings that lean heavily on the region's rolling hardwood terrain, seasonal color, and that unhurried pace that Sullivan County has always traded on. It's the kind of place where the round itself matters more than the scorecard you bring home.
