Lucknow is a small township in East Gippsland, the remote and dramatically beautiful corner of Victoria that stretches from the Snowy Mountains foothills down to the Tasman Sea coast. This is rugged, timbered country — tall eucalyptus forest, river valleys, and a landscape shaped as much by gold-rush history as by geography. The nearby town of Bairnsdale serves as the regional hub, and golf out here carries the unhurried, community-rooted character typical of country Victoria's smaller clubs.
Goose Gully is almost certainly a modest community course — the kind of layout where local knowledge matters more than handicap, where the fairways reflect the natural contours of the land rather than any grand design ambition, and where the social fabric of a small rural town is as much part of the experience as the golf itself. Expect native vegetation close to play, firm summer conditions, and a friendliness you won't find at a metropolitan club.
For visiting golfers, courses like this represent something increasingly rare: golf without pretension, played on ground that feels genuinely rooted in its place. East Gippsland rewards the traveller willing to venture off the main road, and a round at a local club like Goose Gully is very much part of that experience.
