Stone Eagle Golf Club occupies a dramatic site in the Santa Rosa Mountains above Palm Desert, carved into a rugged canyon landscape that few desert courses can match. Designed by Jay Morrish and opened in 2004, it was built as an ultra-private retreat with a strictly limited membership — the kind of club where the experience is deliberately unhurried and exclusive. Morrish, who spent years with Jack Nicklaus's design firm before striking out on his own, used the natural boulder formations and elevation changes to create a layout that feels less manufactured than most Coachella Valley courses, letting the terrain dictate the routing rather than the other way around.
The course plays through a canyon setting where indigenous desert vegetation, exposed granite, and dramatic grade changes make every hole feel distinct. The views across the valley toward the San Jacinto Mountains are genuinely arresting.
Palm Desert sits at the heart of one of America's densest concentrations of golf, but Stone Eagle sits apart from the resort corridor — a private club built for serious players who want desert golf at its most elemental.
