Few mountain golf experiences in New England carry the reputation that Green Mountain National has built since opening in 1996. Designed by Gene Bates, the course winds through the ridges and hardwood forests of Killington — Vermont's premier ski destination — and plays as dramatically as the terrain suggests. Bates worked with the natural contours of the land rather than against them, producing a layout where elevation changes are significant, sightlines can be deceptive, and the surrounding peaks feel genuinely close. It has earned consistent recognition as one of Vermont's top public courses and holds particular appeal for visitors who come to the region expecting scenery and find a course that actually delivers golf worthy of it.
Killington sits in the heart of the Green Mountains, and autumn transforms the surrounding hillsides into something remarkable — fall golf here, with the hardwoods at peak color, is a legitimate reason to make the trip on its own terms.
The course plays to a par 71 and rewards course management over power. Mountain air and varying elevations mean club selection rarely feels routine, and first-time visitors almost always leave wanting a second look.
