Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed Widgi Creek, which opened in 1991 amid the ponderosa pine forests that define the eastern slopes of the Cascades. The routing moves through stands of old-growth timber with a naturalness that feels earned rather than engineered — fairways corridor through the trees without the claustrophobic squeeze that often plagues heavily wooded layouts. The design rewards thoughtful positioning over raw power, and the high-desert elevation gives the ball a noticeable boost through the thin air.
Bend has become one of the Pacific Northwest's most serious golf destinations, and Widgi Creek sits comfortably within that conversation. The surrounding terrain — volcanic soil, sagebrush transitions, pine canopy — gives the course a distinctly Oregon character that resort-heavy neighbors in the area sometimes lack. It plays as a semi-private club, which lends it a quieter, more considered atmosphere than the region's bigger-name destinations.
The Cascades backdrop and the quality of the RTJ Jr. design make this one of central Oregon's more thoughtfully crafted courses, a place where the setting does as much work as the architecture.
