Few California country clubs carry quite the pedigree of La Cumbre, whose roots stretch back to 1921. The course was designed by George C. Thomas Jr. — the same architect responsible for Riviera and Bel-Air — which already tells you something about the caliber of design on offer. Thomas had a gift for routing golf through natural terrain without forcing it, and La Cumbre reflects that sensibility: the layout moves through the Santa Barbara foothills with a quiet confidence, asking for shot-making rather than pure power.
Santa Barbara itself sets an extraordinary stage. The city sits between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific, and La Cumbre occupies the kind of inland foothill ground where live oaks and California sycamores frame fairways, and the light in the afternoon turns everything golden. The climate is about as forgiving as golf gets — warm, dry summers and mild winters mean the course plays year-round in genuinely good condition.
As a private members' club, La Cumbre has the feel of a place that has never needed to impress anyone. The membership knows what it has, and the course rewards those who take the time to understand it.
