Aspotogan Ridge

Few corners of Nova Scotia reward the traveling golfer quite like the South Shore, and Aspotogan Ridge sits on one of its most dramatic promontories, overlooking St. Margaret's Bay along the Aspotogan Peninsula. The course opened in 2004 and was designed by Graham Cooke, one of Canada's most respected course architects, who made full use of the coastal topography — glacially carved granite outcroppings, stands of spruce and fir, and abrupt elevation changes that would be impossible to manufacture anywhere else on the continent.

Cooke's routing asks players to think carefully on nearly every tee shot. The terrain is unforgiving in the best possible way: miss a fairway toward the wrong side of the ridge and the Atlantic wind, which shifts throughout a round, compounds the trouble immediately. Several holes play along exposed headland where the ocean comes fully into view, and the sequence through the back nine is particularly memorable for its combination of risk and scenery.

Hubbards itself is a small, unhurried fishing village that has drawn summer visitors from Halifax for generations. The course draws a largely regional membership and seasonal guests, making it a genuinely local institution rather than a manufactured destination — though the setting and quality of design absolutely warrant the drive from anywhere in the Maritime provinces.
