Lake Junaluska is one of the more distinctive addresses in western North Carolina golf. The course sits within the Lake Junaluska Assembly grounds, a Methodist conference and retreat center established in the early 20th century that has shaped the identity of this corner of the Smoky Mountains for over a century. Playing golf here carries a quieter, more contemplative atmosphere than you'd find at a typical resort layout — the grounds have a camp-like serenity, and the lake itself is a constant presence.
The par 68 design reflects the terrain and the site's priorities rather than any ambition to be a championship test. Shorter holes dominate, and the routing works around the assembly's other facilities, meaning the course has a character all its own — unhurried, a little quirky, and genuinely scenic. Elevation changes and the Blue Ridge backdrop do the heavy lifting that length cannot.
Waynesville sits just outside the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the region draws visitors for its cool summers and fall color as much as its golf. For anyone staying at the Assembly or passing through the mountains, this is an honest, unpretentious round with a strong sense of place.
