Few public courses in the Pacific Northwest carry the civic pride that Indian Canyon does. Opened in 1935 and designed by H. Chandler Egan — the same architect behind Pebble Beach's redesign — the course was built by the Works Progress Administration and has been a cornerstone of Spokane's golf identity ever since. Golf Digest has ranked it among the best public courses in Washington state, and its reputation draws players well beyond the region. The routing winds through a dramatic basalt canyon carved by ancient lava flows, with ponderosa pines framing virtually every hole and the canyon walls creating natural amphitheaters that make the course feel genuinely wild.
The terrain does most of the design work. Elevation changes are severe in places, and the tree-lined corridors demand shape and placement rather than raw power. Several holes play across or along the canyon's edge, rewarding players who can manage their nerves as well as their ball.
Spokane itself is a serious golf town — the Lilac City punches well above its weight for public-access courses — and Indian Canyon sits at the top of that civic tradition. A round here feels less like a municipal outing and more like a genuine pilgrimage.
