Few backdrops in American golf match what you get here. Lone Pine sits at the foot of the Eastern Sierra, where the Alabama Hills give way to the abrupt granite rise of the Sierra Nevada — and Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States, dominates the skyline throughout your round. Playing golf with a 14,505-foot mountain looming over your shoulder is an experience that has no real parallel in the continental U.S.
The course itself is a municipal layout serving a small, remote high-desert community in Inyo County, roughly 200 miles north of Los Angeles along US-395. Lone Pine is a rugged, unhurried town better known for its film history and as a staging point for Whitney Portal hikers than as a golf destination, which gives the club a refreshingly no-frills, locals-first character. The surrounding terrain is stark and open — sagebrush, desert scrub, and thin mountain air at roughly 3,700 feet of elevation.
For visiting golfers, the appeal is straightforward: this is a place where the scenery and the sheer improbability of the setting do as much work as the course design itself. You play here for the story as much as the golf.
