Few golf backdrops in California match what greets players at Lake Shastina Golf Resort. Mount Shasta rises to over 14,000 feet directly to the south, a dormant volcano so dominant it reorients your sense of scale on every tee shot. The course sits in Siskiyou County, high-desert country in the far north of the state where the air is thin and clear, the fairways firm, and the seasons genuinely distinct — a very different California than the one most visitors imagine.
The layout at Lake Shastina is a resort track built to be enjoyed rather than survived, playing through open terrain with the kind of generous landing areas that let you swing freely and actually take in the surroundings. That said, the elevation and the persistent north winds that funnel through this volcanic plateau can reshape any hole in a hurry.
Weed itself is a small former lumber town with an unpretentious character that suits the golf here well. This is not a manicured resort built for show — it's a place serious about the game while staying accessible, where the mountain does most of the decorating.
