Ruffled Feathers has built a genuine reputation among Chicago-area golfers since opening in 1992, designed by Dick Nugent — one of the Midwest's most respected architects. Nugent shaped the layout around the quarry-pocked, heavily wooded terrain that defines this corner of the Des Plaines River valley, and the result is a course that feels far removed from the flat, featureless layouts that dominate so much of northeastern Illinois. Dramatic elevation changes, rock outcroppings, and water features weave through the property in ways that reward strategic thinking off the tee.
Lemont sits roughly 25 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, in DuPage and Cook counties where the landscape starts to roll and break in ways the city proper never does. That topography gives Ruffled Feathers a distinctly different feel from its metropolitan neighbors — more visual drama, more natural framing, more decisions to make on approach shots.
The club operates as a daily-fee facility with a strong local following, and the course has consistently ranked among the better public-access options in the state. It plays to its terrain honestly, which means a wayward shot tends to find trouble that the land itself created.
