Few courses in the Algarve commit so fully to the short game as Vale de Milho. Designed by Dave Thomas and opened in 1991, this 9-hole par-54 layout near the fishing village of Carvoeiro is built entirely of par-3s — a format that sounds modest until you're standing over a downhill pitch to a tucked green with the Atlantic wind shifting off the cliffs. Every hole demands genuine shot-making, and the course has earned a devoted following among serious players who use it to sharpen their iron play and around-the-green skills.
The setting does a lot of the work. Carvoeiro sits on one of the Algarve's more dramatic stretches of coastline, where limestone cliffs, red-rock coves, and umbrella pines define the landscape. Vale de Milho makes use of that terrain's natural rolls and elevation changes, so despite the shorter format the course never feels flat or routine.
For visiting golfers staying along this stretch of the central Algarve, it's a practical and genuinely rewarding option — a place where a single round takes roughly 90 minutes but leaves you thinking about at least 3 or 4 shots long after you've finished.
