Alto sits at roughly 7,000 feet in the Sacramento Mountains of south-central New Mexico, just a short drive from Ruidoso — a resort town known for horse racing at Ruidoso Downs, skiing at Ski Apache, and a mountain escape culture that draws visitors from the scorching lowlands of Texas and New Mexico alike. Golf up here means thin air, cool summers, and the kind of Ponderosa pine and mountain meadow scenery that feels a long way from the desert you may have driven through to get here.
The name Outlaw fits its setting. This is Lincoln County — the same rugged territory where Billy the Kid rode, where the Lincoln County War played out, and where the landscape has always rewarded a certain independent spirit. A course wearing that name in this location carries the character of the region whether it tries to or not.
At 7,000-plus feet, every club flies farther than the yardage suggests, which tends to flatter visitors and humble the ones who forget to adjust.
