Few modern links courses have arrived with the kind of fanfare — or the level of pedigree — that Doonbeg commanded from the moment it opened in 2002. Greg Norman designed it along a spectacular crescent of the Atlantic coastline in County Clare, threading holes through towering sand dunes that rank among the most dramatic in Ireland. The routing required minimal earthmoving; the land essentially handed Norman a links in waiting, and the result is a course that feels ancient despite its relative youth. Donald Trump's acquisition of the property in 2014 brought further investment and visibility, though the landscape remains the undisputed headline.
County Clare sits on Ireland's rugged west coast, where the Shannon Estuary meets the open Atlantic and the weather changes moods without warning. The village of Doonbeg is small and unhurried, and the golf club has become its most recognizable feature — a destination that draws serious players from across the world.
Playing Doonbeg is a genuine test of links craft: bump-and-run thinking, wind management, and the humility to accept that the course, on a given afternoon, may simply have the better of you.
