Few golf courses anywhere can match the sheer improbability of this one. The Ootacamund Gymkhana Club sits at roughly 7,300 feet in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, a living relic of the British Raj era when colonial administrators retreated to these cool, mist-wrapped highlands to escape the punishing heat of the Indian plains. "Ooty," as the hill station is universally known, became one of the subcontinent's most fashionable retreats, and the gymkhana club — with its golf course — was central to that social world. The course is among the oldest in India, with roots stretching back into the 19th century.
Playing here means navigating terrain shaped by the dramatic contours of the Nilgiris rather than any architect's blueprint, with elevation changes, unpredictable mountain weather, and turf conditions unlike anything on the Indian lowlands. The layout's par of 70 reflects a course that rewards precision over power.
Ooty sits within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, surrounded by eucalyptus forests, tea estates, and the UNESCO-recognized Nilgiri mountain ecology. The famous toy train still winds its way up from Mettupalayam. Golf here is less a round than an encounter with a very particular, slowly fading atmosphere — unhurried, anachronistic, and genuinely unlike anywhere else.
