Half Moon Bay Golf Links sits on the San Mateo County coastline roughly 30 miles south of San Francisco, where the Pacific defines everything — the light, the wind, the mood, and the stakes. The Old Course is the original of the two layouts at the resort, and it earned its reputation the hard way: a closing stretch that runs along the bluffs above the ocean is among the most visually dramatic finishes in California golf, with the 18th hole routinely appearing on lists of the most photographed par 5s on the West Coast.
The design work here reflects classic coastal architecture — fairways that rise and fall with the natural terrain, greens exposed to the marine layer, and a wind that shifts enough between morning and afternoon to make the same hole play like two different problems. Positioning off the tee matters far more than raw distance.
Half Moon Bay itself is a small agricultural and fishing town that resisted the full weight of Bay Area development, which is part of why the setting feels so honest. Artichoke farms sit alongside the highway. Fog is a regular playing partner. This is Northern California coastal golf as it has always been — exposed, beautiful, and honest about its demands.
