Few public golf facilities in the greater St. Louis area carry the civic ambition that Gateway National was built to project. Opened in 2000 and designed by Ron Garl, the course sits on reclaimed industrial land along the Mississippi River bottomlands in Madison, Illinois — a former brownfield site transformed into a playable, affordable public track just across the river from downtown St. Louis. That origin story gives the place an unusual character: flat, open terrain shaped by human hands rather than natural topography, with the Gateway Arch visible on the horizon and the industrial corridor of the American Bottom as its backdrop.
Garl worked with what the land offered, and the result is a course that rewards accuracy and course management over raw power. The routing makes strong use of water features and strategic bunkering to compensate for the relatively modest elevation changes the site provides.
