Vienna's relationship with golf is older than most people expect — the sport arrived in Austria's imperial capital in the late 19th century, carried in by British diplomats and the cosmopolitan aristocracy that orbited the Habsburg court. Golfclub Wien, founded in 1901, is one of the oldest golf clubs in continental Europe, and that heritage is felt the moment you arrive. The club occupies the Freudenau, a historic parkland at the eastern edge of the city within the Prater — Vienna's vast public green lung, home to the famous Prater Turm funicular and one of Europe's oldest racecourses.
