Rancho Solano opened in 1990 and quickly became one of the more respected public-access courses in Solano County, designed by Gary Roger Baird on rolling terrain that captures the open, golden character of the inland California hills. The layout works with natural elevation changes and mature oak clusters rather than against them, giving it a distinctly Californian feel that resort-manufactured courses rarely achieve. It sits in the broad corridor between the Bay Area and Sacramento, where the delta winds pick up in the afternoons and turn a manageable round into something that demands real shot-making.
Fairfield itself is a working city rather than a golf destination, which means Rancho Solano draws a loyal local following — military personnel from nearby Travis Air Force Base, commuters, and serious recreational players who appreciate a genuine test at a fair price. The course has hosted Northern California junior and amateur events over the years, giving it a competitive pedigree uncommon for a daily-fee track.
The par 72 routing plays longer and more demanding than many casual visitors expect, largely because the afternoon wind off the Carquinez Strait turns straightforward holes into genuine decisions. It rewards players who manage their game from tee to green rather than simply swinging freely.
