Diablo Creek has been a workhorse of the East Bay golf scene for decades, a public course operated by the City of Concord that punches well above its municipal weight. Designed by Bob Baldock, whose fingerprints are on dozens of Northern California layouts from the mid-20th century, the course opened in 1962 and has long served as a legitimate test for the working golfer — not a pitch-and-putt, not a trophy club, but a honest, well-maintained track where the game gets played seriously.
The course takes its name from nearby Diablo Creek and plays in the shadow — literally and figuratively — of Mount Diablo, the dominant peak of Contra Costa County that anchors the regional landscape. The surrounding terrain is classic inland Northern California: dry golden hills in summer, vivid green after the winter rains, and a climate that keeps the course playable most of the year without the fog that dogs the Bay's western edges.
For East Bay golfers, Diablo Creek fills an important role — accessible, affordable, and long enough to demand real shot-making. The par-71 layout rewards course management over power, and its mature trees and creek crossings give it more character than a first glance might suggest.
