Few clubs on Boston's North Shore carry the quiet prestige of Beverly Golf & Tennis Club. Founded in 1898, it stands among Massachusetts' oldest private clubs, and its Donald Ross design speaks to that lineage — the bunkering, the subtly crowned greens, and the deliberate routing across rolling North Shore terrain reward patience and precision far more than power.
Beverly occupies a stretch of inland ground that surprises first-time visitors expecting oceanside drama. Instead, the character comes from mature trees, firm turf conditions in the warmer months, and greens that punish the wrong side of the hole. The par-70 layout is shorter than many Ross courses, but his fingerprints — false fronts, run-off slopes, deceptive green complexes — keep the card honest.
The club sits in a part of Essex County that has long supported serious golf, with Kernwood, Tedesco, and Wenham nearby adding to a dense regional scene. Beverly draws members who value history and understated tradition over resort spectacle, and the atmosphere reflects exactly that.
