Few country clubs in the American Midwest carry the architectural pedigree of Old Warson. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1954, representing one of his most celebrated inland designs — long regarded among the finest private layouts in Missouri and consistently ranked among the top courses in the state. Its character reflects Jones's signature philosophy: wide, sculpted fairways giving way to large, contoured greens defended by strategic bunkering, rewarding precise shotmaking over raw power.
Old Warson earned its place in national golf history when it hosted the 1971 Ryder Cup, one of the most memorable editions of the matches, where the United States defeated Great Britain. That moment cemented the club's reputation well beyond St. Louis, and the course remains a point of civic pride in a city with a genuinely strong private golf culture.
