Craig sits in the Yampa Valley of northwestern Colorado, a working ranching and energy town far removed from the resort corridors of the Front Range or the ski-town courses of Summit County. The surrounding high desert terrain — sagebrush flats, rimrock mesas, and the Yampa River winding through — gives this corner of the state a raw, unhurried character that shows up in the golf here too. Elevations in the valley run around 6,200 feet, which means the ball carries well and the air has that clean, thin quality that makes even a mediocre drive feel a little more satisfying than it deserves to.
Yampa Valley Golf Course serves as the genuine community course for Moffat County, the kind of track where local rivalries run deep and regulars know every bounce. Public golf in this part of Colorado is unpretentious by nature — you play the land as it is, not as it's been manicured into something else.
For a visitor, the draw is the honest, no-frills round and the chance to play in a stretch of Colorado that tourism largely bypasses. The views toward the flat-topped mesas and open ranch country give the course a distinct sense of place that polished resort layouts rarely manage.
