Onion Creek Club

Few Austin golf courses carry the history that Onion Creek Club does. This is where the Legends of Golf tournament was born in 1978 — the event widely credited with launching the Senior PGA Tour, now known as the PGA Tour Champions. Watching Jimmy Demaret and Byron Nelson compete here helped convince the golf world that older pros still had something worth watching, and the club hosted the event through the 1980s before it moved on. The course was designed by Jimmy Demaret himself, in collaboration with architect John Finger, giving it a lineage tied directly to one of the game's great characters.

The layout occupies the rolling terrain of South Austin along the creek that gives the club its name, with the Hill Country beginning to announce itself in the topography. Trees frame most holes, and the par-70 configuration keeps things interesting — shorter overall, but demanding precision rather than raw power.

Onion Creek is a private club, and it carries the quietly confident air of a place that knows its place in American golf history without needing to advertise it.
