Few golf courses in New England carry a backstory quite like Red Tail's. The club sits on the grounds of the former Fort Devens military base in north-central Massachusetts — land the Army vacated in the early 1990s — and that transformation from Cold War installation to celebrated public golf destination gives the place a distinctly unconventional origin. Brian Silva designed the course, which opened in 2002 and quickly earned recognition as one of the premier public-access layouts in Massachusetts, praised for its conditioning and strategic variety.
Silva routed the course through mature woodlands and open stretches of the former base's varied terrain, producing a layout that rewards smart course management over raw power. The wide range of tee options makes it genuinely playable at multiple levels without sacrificing the challenge that earns it respect among serious golfers.
Devens itself is a unique post-military community — part managed redevelopment zone, part small-town New England — and that unusual setting gives Red Tail a character you won't find at a conventional country club or resort. It's a serious golf experience in an unexpectedly fascinating place.
