Mare Island Golf Course

Mare Island has a backstory unlike almost any other municipal course in California. The golf layout occupies part of the historic Mare Island Naval Shipyard, the U.S. Navy's first permanent installation on the Pacific Coast, which operated continuously from 1854 until its closure in 1996. Playing here means walking ground that once built warships and submarines — dry docks, industrial buildings, and Victorian-era officers' quarters still frame the property, giving the course an atmosphere no amount of course design can manufacture.

Vallejo sits at the northern tip of San Francisco Bay, where the Napa River meets the Carquinez Strait. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, characteristic of the reclaimed industrial waterfront, and the Bay Area's prevailing winds off the water can turn a straightforward round into something considerably more demanding depending on the time of day.

As a public facility rooted in a repurposed military base, Mare Island offers the kind of accessible, no-frills golf that rewards local regulars and visiting history enthusiasts alike — a course where the scenery does much of the heavy lifting.
