Kulm sits in the heart of LaMoure County in southeastern North Dakota, a stretch of the Northern Plains where the glacially shaped terrain rolls in long, deliberate waves and the sky earns every cliché ever written about it. Golf out here is community golf in the truest sense — a small town investing in a course that punches well above Kulm's modest population, and a place where members have likely known each other for generations.
A private 18-hole layout at par 72 in a town this size is no small thing. Courses like Kulm Country Club are the social backbone of rural American life, the kind of place where a Saturday morning tee time doubles as a town hall and the 19th hole conversation outlasts the round itself. Expectations are different here than at a resort destination, and that's entirely the point.
North Dakota's golf season is compressed by a hard winter and an earnest spring, which tends to produce golfers who waste nothing — no practice swing, no slow walk, and certainly no ungrateful round.
