Salgados Golf Course

Few stretches of Portugal's Algarve coast pack as much visual drama as the wetlands and lagoons behind Praia de Salgados, and this course leans fully into that landscape. Designed by architect Rui Sanches and opened in 1994, Salgados sits on a low-lying site that wraps around a bird sanctuary and saltwater lagoon — making it one of the more ecologically distinctive layouts on the entire southern coast. Water comes into play on the majority of holes, but the real character of the course comes from the sense of openness and the constant presence of birdlife overhead and along the margins.

The design rewards patience and course management over raw power. Fairways are generous enough to invite attacking play, but the lagoon and reed-fringed hazards punish lateral mistakes in a way that pure length cannot protect you from.

Albufeira sits at the heart of the Algarve's tourist belt, and Salgados plays to that resort identity well — it's a course that welcomes visiting players and remains one of the more memorable rounds in the region for reasons a scorecard alone won't convey.
