Mullen sits at the heart of the Nebraska Sandhills, one of the most geologically distinctive landscapes in North America — a vast, stabilized dune system blanketed in native grass that rolls and pitches in every direction. It's a region more associated with cattle ranches than resort destinations, and golf here feels genuinely remote, the kind of place you drive to deliberately.

Links-style terrain comes naturally to Sandhills country. The ground movement, the wind that almost never stops, and the sandy subsoil make for conditions that reward creativity off the tee and running the ball along the ground. A par 71 suggests at least some asymmetry in the design — likely fewer par 5s or an extra par 3 — which can give a layout a distinctive rhythm that a standard card doesn't.

Hooker County is sparsely populated, and a course this far off the beaten path tends to belong deeply to its community. Expect a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere, morning tee times with few crowds, and the kind of round where the landscape does most of the talking.
