Big Foot Country Club takes its name from the Potawatomi chief Big Foot, who once led his people along the shores of Geneva Lake — one of the most storied bodies of water in the upper Midwest. Fontana sits on the western end of that lake, a small resort town that has drawn Chicago-area escapes since the railroad era. The surrounding Walworth County landscape is rolling glacial moraine: wooded ridgelines, kettle depressions, and the kind of natural contour that makes for interesting ground without an architect having to invent it.
The club carries the quiet character of a members' retreat in a community where golf and lake life have coexisted for generations. An unusual par of 73 hints at a routing that doesn't quite fit the modern template — likely an extra par 5 or a long par 3 that earned its designation honestly from the original layout.
For visiting golfers, the Geneva Lake corridor offers a compact but genuine regional golf scene, and Big Foot sits within it as a local institution rather than a destination showpiece — the kind of place where the members know every bounce.
