Designed by Manuel Piñero — the Ryder Cup player and respected course architect — and opened in the early 1990s, it sits in the hills above Alhaurín de la Torre, just inland from the Costa del Sol's better-known resort corridor. That position gives it a markedly different character from the coastal layouts: the terrain is rolling and rugged, the views stretch across the Guadalhorce valley toward the Mediterranean, and the olive trees and Aleppo pines lining the fairways root the course firmly in the Andalusian landscape rather than the manufactured lushness of some resort neighbors.

Piñero routed the layout to work with the hillside contours, meaning players face genuine elevation changes and angled lies throughout the round. It rewards shot-shaping and local knowledge — the kind of course that reveals itself over multiple visits.

Alhaurín de la Torre sits roughly 15 kilometers from Málaga city, making Lauro a genuine local course rather than a tourist destination, and the atmosphere in the clubhouse reflects that: relaxed, Spanish, and unpretentious.
