Few clubs in American golf carry the cultural weight of Bel-Air Country Club. Carved into the Santa Monica Mountains in the late 1920s and routed through terrain so severe it required a funicular tram to ferry members between holes, the course was redesigned by George Thomas — the same architect behind Riviera and Los Angeles Country Club — giving it a pedigree that sits comfortably among the great golden-age designs of Southern California. The layout plays to a par 70, which undersells its difficulty; the canyon topography and mature sycamores demand precise ball-striking and creative shotmaking rather than length alone.
The club's history is inseparable from Hollywood. Members have included some of the most recognizable names in American entertainment, and the clubhouse atmosphere reflects that particular brand of old Los Angeles glamour — relaxed but unmistakably exclusive.
Bel-Air sits within one of the most expensive zip codes in the country, yet the course itself feels removed from the city, the canyons swallowing the noise and lending rounds a surprisingly intimate, almost rustic character despite the surroundings.
