Cle Elum sits at the eastern gateway to the Cascades, where the mountains give way to the high desert plateau of Kittitas County — a transition that shapes everything about playing golf here. The Yakima River watershed, ponderosa pine, and big Washington sky define the landscape in ways no scorecard can capture. This is ranch and mining country, and the Prospector name nods directly to the region's coal and gold-rush heritage that drove settlement of the upper Kittitas Valley in the late 19th century.
As a public course serving a small mountain-pass community, Prospector plays the role of honest local track — the kind of place where Seattle-side golfers stop on their way over to Eastern Washington and find themselves genuinely surprised by the surroundings. The setting does much of the heavy lifting, with the Cascades framing the round and the high-elevation air giving the ball a little extra carry.
Cle Elum itself is a low-key destination that has grown in popularity with outdoor enthusiasts, and Prospector reflects that unpretentious character — accessible, scenic, and worth the detour off I-90 for anyone looking to play something off the beaten resort circuit.
