Kinloch Golf Club

Few courses in New Zealand carry the mystique of Kinloch Golf Club, the Greg Norman–designed layout that quietly earned a place among the finest private golf experiences in the Southern Hemisphere. Opened in 2007 on the northwestern shores of Lake Taupō, it was conceived as the centerpiece of an exclusive residential community and immediately drew comparisons to the world's great heathland and links-influenced designs — not for mimicking them, but for the way Norman's team coaxed something genuinely strategic and beautiful from terrain that could have been squandered.

The course plays across volcanic plateau country above the lake, with sweeping views of the Taupō caldera and, on clear days, the snow-capped peaks of Tongariro National Park in the distance. Pumice-based soils drain fast, fairways run firm, and the prevailing winds off the lake demand that you manage your ball rather than simply overpower the layout.

Kinloch remains a private members' club, so access is limited — but that exclusivity has helped preserve exactly the unhurried, immaculate character that made its reputation in the first place.
