Chipstead Golf Club sits on the North Downs of Surrey, in the village of the same name just south of Coulsdon. This stretch of chalk downland is some of the most historically rich golfing territory in England — you're within a few miles of courses that helped shape the early game, and the landscape itself, with its open ridges, dry valleys, and short-cropped turf, is about as naturally suited to golf as anywhere in the country.
The course plays to a par of 68, which signals a layout built more for precision and shot-making than brute length. Downland courses of this type tend to reward ground game and course management over power — the firm, fast turf characteristic of chalk-based fairways can run the ball in unexpected ways, and the natural contours of the hills do much of the architectural work.
As a members' club serving a commuter-belt Surrey village, Chipstead carries the character of a course that locals genuinely treasure — unpretentious, well-kept, and rooted in the community it's served for well over a century.
