Buchan Valley sits in one of Victoria's more dramatic inland landscapes — the limestone karst country of East Gippsland, where the Snowy River cuts through ancient gorges and the surrounding hills roll into dense state forest. The town of Buchan is best known for its cave system, a significant tourist draw, but the valley itself offers a quieter kind of beauty: wide river flats, grazing country, and a scale that feels genuinely remote despite being accessible from Bairnsdale and the Princes Highway.
The course shares its ground with a racecourse, a pairing that is entirely characteristic of rural Australian golf — country towns have long made dual use of their flat, open recreation reserves, and the layout here almost certainly plays across or around the racing track's oval. That kind of setup gives the course an unhurried, community character that no private club can replicate.
East Gippsland golf is honest, unpretentious country golf, where the terrain does the work and the welcome is genuine. For anyone travelling through to the Snowy River National Park or the high country, Buchan Valley is the sort of stop worth making the clubs earn their space in the boot.
