Forest Dunes is one of the most celebrated resort courses in the American Midwest, and it earned that reputation quickly. Designed by Tom Weiskopf and opened in 2002, it was carved through the jack pine and sand barrens of northern Michigan's Roscommon County — terrain that behaves more like the British Isles than the Great Lakes region. The course draws frequent comparisons to classic heathland and links designs, and Golf Digest and Golf Magazine have both ranked it among the top courses in Michigan and the country since its opening years.
The routing takes full advantage of the sandy, rolling land, producing wide fairways framed by native grasses and towering pines rather than tight, penal rough. Weiskopf built in multiple options off the tee, rewarding aggressive play while keeping recreational rounds enjoyable. The result is a course that plays differently depending on wind and strategy, with significant replay value.
Roscommon sits in the heart of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, a region serious golfers treat as a destination in its own right, with Gaylord and Traverse City forming the broader northern Michigan golf corridor. Forest Dunes anchors the southern end of that corridor with genuine authority.
