Few golf settings on Kauai compete with what Kiahuna offers: a layout carved through the historic sugar plantation lands of Poipu, on the island's sunny south shore. This is one of the drier, more reliably sunny corners of the "Garden Isle," shielded from the rain that dominates the north coast, and the surrounding landscape reflects it — low scrub, swaying palms, and the remnants of a sugarcane-growing heritage that shaped this part of Koloa for well over a century.
The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., whose work here weaves around ancient Hawaiian archaeological sites and remnant stonework from the plantation era, giving the round an unusual cultural texture you simply don't find on most resort tracks. Water features come into play on multiple holes, and the trade winds that funnel across the south shore add a variable, humbling dimension regardless of how the yardage reads on paper.
As a resort course open to visitors staying throughout the Poipu area, Kiahuna pitches itself as accessible rather than intimidating — a par 70 that rewards course management and lets the extraordinary surroundings do much of the work.
