Lamar sits in the heart of the Pee Dee region of South Carolina, a stretch of the Lowcountry interior defined by tobacco farms, longleaf pine stands, and the flat, sandy terrain that characterizes much of the state's inland counties. Golf here is unpretentious and community-rooted — a world away from the resort corridors of Myrtle Beach an hour to the east, though the same coastal plain geology underlies it all.
Governors Run Golf Club offers an 18-hole, par-72 layout in that tradition: a place where local members and everyday players make up the regular crowd, and where the game is played without the pageantry of destination golf. Courses in this part of the Pee Dee tend to work with the natural openness of the land, letting the pines and occasional water hazards do the work that dramatic elevation changes might do elsewhere.
For golfers looking to play outside the Myrtle Beach tourist circuit, Darlington County's courses offer a more grounded alternative — less polished, perhaps, but genuinely connected to the region they occupy.
