Few Phoenix-area courses announce themselves quite like this one. Lookout Mountain Golf Club sits within the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort on the northern edge of Phoenix, a layout that threads through the rugged volcanic terrain of the North Mountain Preserve. Designed by Bill Johnston and opened in 1988, the course makes no attempt to flatten its landscape — elevation changes are dramatic, tee shots play across arroyos, and the mountain backdrop shifts with every hole. It earned a devoted following among resort guests and locals alike precisely because it asks you to think, not just swing.
The surrounding Sonoran Desert is the real co-designer here. Saguaro cactus, desert scrub, and exposed basalt define the rough margins of every fairway, and errant shots are punished in ways a penalty stroke alone can't fully describe. Morning rounds in cooler months remain among the more visually striking experiences in the Valley of the Sun.
This is a resort course, but not a soft one. The terrain demands course management and rewards players who work with the land rather than against it.
