Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed Royal Westmoreland in the early 1990s on a former sugar plantation on Barbados's prestigious west coast, and the course opened in 1994 to immediate acclaim. The routing takes full advantage of the rugged coral-limestone terrain and dramatic elevation changes that most people don't associate with the Caribbean — some tee boxes sit high enough to catch sweeping views of the turquoise water below. It has consistently ranked among the best courses in the Caribbean and Central America, and its private membership has historically attracted the kind of high-profile European clientele drawn to the villas and residences that surround the fairways.
St. James parish sits along the famed Platinum Coast, Barbados's most refined stretch of shoreline, where the trade winds blow reliably off the Atlantic and keep conditions surprisingly playable despite the tropical heat. That same breeze becomes a genuine factor on approach shots, particularly on the more exposed back nine.
Royal Westmoreland plays as a proper test — firm turf, strategic bunkering, and greens that reward precise ball-striking over power. Guests staying within the estate community have access, but the exclusivity of the setting is very much part of what the course is selling.
