The Montado Golf Course sits within the Herdade do Montado estate in Palmela, a municipality that stretches across the Setúbal Peninsula just south of Lisbon. The course takes its name from the montado, the distinctively Portuguese landscape of cork oak and stone pine woodland that defines much of the Alentejo and the Setúbal interior — and that woodland is the course's defining character. Fairways wind through mature cork oaks whose stripped, rust-red trunks are a constant, striking presence, giving the layout a natural drama that no amount of architectural invention could manufacture.
Opened in the 1990s and designed to respect rather than clear its wooded terrain, Montado plays as a genuine tree-lined test where accuracy off the tee counts for considerably more than raw distance. The rolling topography of the Arrábida foothills adds elevation changes that keep the round visually engaging and strategically honest.
The surrounding region is worth the trip on its own terms — Palmela's hilltop castle, the wines of the Setúbal denomination, and the wild coastline of the Parque Natural da Arrábida are all within easy reach, making Montado a natural fit for a golf-and-travel itinerary anchored south of the capital.
