Few golf clubs in Spain carry a pedigree quite like Real Golf Club de Zarautz. Founded in 1916, it ranks among the oldest clubs in the Basque Country and holds the distinction of being the only links-style course in Spain that runs directly alongside the ocean. The layout sits atop a narrow coastal terrace above one of the longest beaches on the Cantabrian coast, with the Atlantic stretching out to the north and the green hills of Gipuzkoa rising sharply to the south. That combination of exposure and elevation makes wind the decisive factor here — a calm morning can become a completely different examination by afternoon.
Zarautz itself is a lively surf town with a strong local identity, and the club reflects that — this is not a manicured resort experience but a serious, weather-beaten course with genuine character. The turf, the views, and the raw coastal conditions give it a personality closer to links golf in Ireland or Scotland than anything you'd typically find on the Iberian Peninsula.
For visiting golfers, the setting alone justifies the trip. Standing on the exposed holes with breakers rolling in below and the Cantabrian hills framing the scene behind you, there is simply nowhere else in Spain quite like it.
