Castro Marim Golf & Country Club

Portugal's eastern Algarve has long played second fiddle to the resort-heavy stretch around Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo, but Castro Marim sits at the far end of that coastline where the region genuinely quiets down — right on the Spanish border, beside the Rio Guadiana estuary and the salt marshes of the Castro Marim nature reserve. The course opened in 1993 and was designed by Terry Murray, a layout that works with the rolling, scrub-covered terrain rather than imposing anything artificial on it. The result is a course that feels more like a proper country club than a tourist-track product — which is exactly what it is.

Because membership is private, Castro Marim carries a more exclusive, unhurried atmosphere than most Algarvian golf. The natural setting does a lot of the heavy lifting aesthetically: the marshland views, the cork oak and cistus, the birdlife drifting in from the estuary reserve next door.

The eastern Algarve's climate runs reliably warm and dry through much of the year, with the shoulder seasons offering particularly agreeable conditions — less traffic, cooler temperatures, and light that suits a course whose character is quietly scenic rather than showy.
