Few golf destinations in the Canadian Rockies carry a name quite as evocative as this one. Bootleg Gap takes its identity from the area's colorful history — Kimberley was a hard-rock mining town, home to the Sullivan Mine, one of the largest lead-zinc operations in the world, and the rough-and-tumble culture that came with it. That backstory gives the place a personality before you even pull a club from the bag.
Kimberley sits in the Rocky Mountain Trench in the East Kootenay region of southeastern BC, at an elevation that keeps the air thin and the ball flying. The surrounding terrain is dramatic — steep forested ridgelines, the St. Mary and Kootenay river valleys carving through the landscape — and a course out here is as much a scenic experience as a competitive one. The short mountain season concentrates a devoted local golf community, and the conditions when the course opens tend to be genuinely good.
For visitors, Kimberley itself is a bit of an oddity: a former mining town reinvented with a Bavarian theme that now leans into ski tourism and outdoor recreation. Bootleg Gap fits that spirit — a public facility in a place that takes its mountain setting seriously.
