Few courses capture the heathland character of England's south coast quite like Knighton Heath, a members' club that has occupied its sandy, pine-fringed ground on the western edge of Bournemouth for over a century. The club was founded in 1976 — relatively young by English standards — though the land itself has the feel of something far more established, the kind of terrain that seems made for golf: firm, fast-draining soil, low-lying heather, and Scots pines that frame fairways with a quiet severity. It plays as a par 70, which tells you something about its character: this is a course that earns its difficulty through precision and placement rather than brute length.
Bournemouth sits at the edge of the New Forest corridor, and the heathland landscape that runs through this part of Dorset and into Hampshire has produced some genuinely distinctive golf. Knighton Heath belongs to that tradition — open sky, natural ground movement, and a layout where reading the turf matters as much as reading the wind.
For visiting golfers, this is a proper members' club: expect well-kept turf, a genuine local atmosphere, and the kind of course that rewards course management over power. The south coast's relatively mild winters make it playable year-round, and the heathland setting looks its best in late summer when the heather blooms.
